The smallest dog breeds in the world | Which is the smallest dog in the world?

Welcome! How big is the smallest dog in the world? What special care should you take before adopting a small dog? Are they ideal for kids? Discover several surprising facts about the world’s smallest dog breeds.

Chihuahua

This breed, originally from Mexico, can weigh up to 6 kg (about 13 lbs). They are protective, loyal, and brave. These dogs often have a strong personality.

Did you know that in 2014, a pack of dogs terrorized Arizona by attacking children on their way to school? Many abandoned dogs began grouping together and breeding on the streets, forming packs of up to 15 dogs, which led to a public health alert in Arizona.

Affenpinscher

They usually weigh between 3 and 4.5 kg (6.6–10 lbs). Affenpinschers are very independent and courageous. They’re extremely intelligent and full of energy, so they’re recommended for active families who can keep them entertained.

This breed, which originated in Germany, is one of the oldest in the world. Its name means “monkey pinscher” in German. Due to their flat face, they often suffer from breathing problems.

Brussels Griffon

They usually weigh between 3 and 4 kg (6.6–8.8 lbs) and can grow up to 25 cm (10 inches) tall. They are alert, loyal, and curious dogs with a very social personality and are easy to train. To help them accept other animals, it’s best to socialize them from a young age.

Biewer Terrier

This breed weighs between 1.8 and 3.6 kg (4–8 lbs). Very similar to the Yorkshire Terrier, they are loyal, playful, and intelligent. The breed originated in 1984 from a genetic mutation called “Piebald” in Yorkshire Terriers. Because this mutation is linked to a recessive gene, it was very difficult to produce puppies with it.

Since they are friendly and easy to train, they’re often recommended for kids. However, small dogs are extremely fragile and can easily be injured—or even killed—by falls or rough handling. That’s why responsible adoption is so important, and why you should make sure a child is mature enough to live with an animal.

Toy Poodle

This breed usually weighs between 1.8 and 2.7 kg (4–6 lbs) and measures 28–35 cm (11–14 inches) in height. They’re very friendly, energetic, and intelligent. One important fact about poodles is that they tend to bark a lot, so they’re not ideal for homes where noise must be kept to a minimum.

Papillon

This breed typically weighs between 2.5 and 4.5 kg (5.5–10 lbs) and can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in height. They are friendly, energetic dogs that may have either upright or floppy ears.

American Eskimo Dog (Toy)

With its spitz-like appearance and white coat, it closely resembles an arctic fox. Dogs of this breed weigh between 2.7 and 4.5 kg (6–10 lbs). They’re intelligent, friendly, and protective.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies weigh around 3.2 kg (7 lbs). They are energetic, protective, and affectionate. They dislike being alone, making them unsuitable for people who leave their dog alone for long hours.

Did you know that Yorkshire Terriers were once used to hunt rats? Their clothing isn’t just for looks—they have very low tolerance to cold.

Miniature Pinscher

They weigh between 3 and 4 kg (6.6–8.8 lbs). They are energetic, affectionate, and playful, always alert, and tend to bark to warn their owners. Because of their high energy, they need training from an early age to avoid developing undesirable behaviors.

Japanese Chin

Japanese Chins usually weigh between 3 and 5 kg (6.6–11 lbs) and don’t exceed 19 cm (7.5 inches) in height. They have a very affectionate and social personality.

These dogs were once a symbol of nobility in Japan. Did you know that each dog had its own servant? Yes, someone followed them around and catered to their every whim.

Pomeranian

This breed usually weighs between 1.3 and 3.2 kg (3–7 lbs). They are loving, cheerful, and full of energy. Interestingly, their ancestor, the German Spitz, was much larger and used to pull sleds. As technology advanced and sled dogs were no longer needed, smaller variations were developed.

Did you know that in Dr. Stanley Coren’s intelligence ranking, the Pomeranian holds the 23rd spot out of 138 breeds?

Which is the smallest dog in the world?

Pearl is the name of the Chihuahua that won the Guinness World Record in 2023 for being the smallest living dog. Pearl is just 9.14 cm (3.59 inches) tall and 12.7 cm (5 inches) long. And how much does the smallest dog in the world weigh? Only 553 grams (1.22 lbs)!

A fun fact about Pearl is that she’s the niece of the previous record holder for the smallest living dog, Guinness World Records run in the family.

Special care for small dogs when living with kids

A child must be mature and responsible enough to understand that a dog is not a stuffed toy. Kids should be taught not to squeeze too hard or drop the dog. It’s always best to supervise interactions between small dogs and young children to ensure the safety of both.

Miniature dogs are often more prone to certain health problems because of their more fragile organs. Before adopting a miniature dog, it’s important to research the most common health issues for that breed so you can prevent them. You might also consider choosing another breed or a slightly larger variation.
