The smartest dog breeds in the world

Welcome! Which dog breed is the most intelligent in the world? Is your dog on this list? Discover the 10 smartest dog breeds in the world according to Dr. Stanley Coren’s ranking, along with some fun facts about each breed.

Number 10

Australian Cattle Dog

This breed is considered a very intelligent and agile working dog that needs plenty of stimulation. They have a strong hunting instinct and should be socialized with other animals from a young age to ensure good coexistence.

They are very attached to their owners. Interestingly, they are often born white or almost completely white and their coat changes color as they grow. This is believed to be a trait inherited from Dalmatians, which were once used in crossbreeding to increase loyalty and shape the breed we know today.

Number 9

Rottweiler

Rottweilers are excellent working dogs, both as guard dogs and herding dogs. Thanks to their courage and loyalty, they hold the 9th spot in the ranking. They also have one of the most powerful bites of all dog breeds.

Did you know that in Spain this breed is considered dangerous, and you need a special license to own one?

Number 8

Papillon

These dogs are highly intelligent and agile, and they stand out in beauty contests because of their striking appearance. A fun fact: in Northern Europe they are often called “squirrel dogs.” They are also excellent rodent hunters.

The name “Papillon” (French for butterfly) comes from the shape of their ears, which resemble a butterfly’s wings.

Number 7

Labrador Retriever

Labradors are very friendly with both strangers and family, which makes them poor guard dogs.

Did you know they were once used as fishing dogs? Being great swimmers, they helped fishermen retrieve fish that escaped from the nets and recover objects that fell into the water.

Their sense of smell is so sharp that they can detect diseases like coronavirus and cancer. A study from the University of Helsinki showed a 92% accuracy rate in detecting COVID cases with dogs.

Number 6

Shetland Sheepdog

This breed combines intelligence and agility, making them excellent competitors in agility sports. They were originally bred for herding flocks and are one of the smaller herding breeds.

Number 5

Doberman Pinscher

A brilliant guard and working dog that stands out for its intelligence. Did you know that Dobermans can learn something new with as few as five repetitions?

They’re also very fast and can reach speeds of up to 35 mph (56 km/h)!

This breed played such an important role in the military that a monument was built in Guam to honor war dogs, featuring a statue of a Doberman Pinscher.

Number 4

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are not only highly intelligent but also have an incredible sense of smell, which allows them to be trained to find all kinds of objects. Although they are very active, they absolutely love food, which makes them prone to obesity.

Did you know that a Golden Retriever won the very first obedience competition of the American Kennel Club? And in 2020, the oldest Golden Retriever on record, named Augie, reached the age of 20, even though their usual life expectancy is around 12 years.

Number 3

German Shepherd

German Shepherds take the third spot on the list. They are extremely intelligent and are widely used in many fields thanks to their remarkable learning ability.

One of the most famous canine actors was Rin Tin Tin. Did you know he was rescued by soldier Lee Duncan during World War I? After the war, Duncan trained him and got him roles in 27 movies—earning Rin Tin Tin a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Number 2

Poodle

The word “Poodle” comes from a term meaning “water dog.” They were once commonly used to hunt waterfowl. Thanks to their great intelligence, Poodles became known as acrobatic dogs and were often the stars of shows and circuses. They proudly take second place in the ranking.

Number 1

Border Collie

Besides being friendly and energetic, Border Collies are also famous for their intelligence. It’s no surprise they dominate agility competitions—they are considered the most intelligent dog breed in the world.

Did you know the word “Collie” means “useful” in Celtic? They are also excellent watchdogs. A Border Collie named Jumpy even earned a Guinness World Record for skateboarding 100 meters in just 19.65 seconds!
