Camel facts | Animal facts

Welcome! Can a camel drink more than 100 liters of water at once? How fast can a camel run? How many humps do camels have? Discover these and other fascinating facts in this post.

Camels are used as a means of transportation for many people in Asia and Africa. It is estimated that camels were domesticated between 3,500 and 4,000 years ago.

Did you know that the Bactrian camel is the strongest of all? It can carry up to 181 kg over a distance of 48 km at a speed of up to 3 km/h. Without carrying heavy loads, they can run as fast as 70 km/h!

Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps but in their bloodstream. In reality, their humps serve as fat reserves, allowing them to survive for several weeks without food.

An interesting fact about the hump is that since it stores fat, if the camel uses up this reserve, the hump can become floppy. However, with proper nourishment, it returns to its normal state.

Camels are ruminant animals and feed on plants such as wormwood, alhagi, and glasswort.

At temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, they can survive for up to five days without drinking water. Sounds impressive? Well, these animals can survive up to seven months in winter without drinking water! During this time, they get some moisture from the plants they eat. They can drink up to 115 liters of water in one go!

Sandstorms in the desert can make visibility extremely difficult. That’s why camels have three eyelids and long eyelashes. Another protective feature they have developed is the ability to completely close their nostrils to keep out sand.

These animals have 34 teeth, two more than humans. Their lips are extremely tough, allowing them to eat even thorny bushes. Egypt is known for having the finest camels.

Did you know that not all camels have two humps? Asian camels (Bactrian camels) have two humps, while Arabian camels (dromedaries) have only one. One-humped camels are smaller than two-humped camels.

A curious fact about camel milk is that it is the most similar to human milk. It also contains 10 times more iron and vitamin C than cow’s milk.

You’ve probably seen a video of a camel spitting at someone, but why do they do that? Spitting is a defense mechanism used to deter threats, distract, or surprise.

Another interesting fact is that camels have oval-shaped red blood cells. Like llama dung, camel dung can also be used as fuel.

Did you know that camels love the rain? If they see storm clouds, they will walk toward them.

Although they may seem like gentle animals, you should be cautious during the mating season, male camels can become very aggressive.

The wolf is the camel’s main predator. Camels are not good at defending themselves against wolf attacks and are naturally very timid animals.

A camel typically stands about 1.85 meters tall. Their lifespan ranges between 40 and 50 years.
