Many of you may have seen the hit TV series Star Trek, but did you know that his creator and his wife had a space burial?
Gene Roddenberry died in 1991. The first part of his ashes was launched into space in 1997 on board the first completely Spanish satellite, Minisat 01, which in addition to his ashes, carried those of more than 23 people. With Minisat 01, Spain became the second European country to launch a satellite from its own territory. But only 25 years later the second part of Roddenberry's remains was sent, now together with the ashes of his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry.
The transportation of the two was carried out thanks to El Vulcan Centaur, from United Launch Alliance, which took flight on January 26, 2022. This mission was named Enterprise as a tribute to them and the fans of the saga. Unlike the satellite, the Vulcan Centaur has sent Gene and Majel's ashes into deep space.
The ship also had messages sent by fans that were stored digitally and thrown into space along with the ashes. The company that is in charge of the ceremony is called Celestis and has been providing space funeral services since 1997.
